The leader of the National Freedom Front, Wimal Weerawansa, has revealed that the lawyer who appeared on behalf of Zahran Hashim, considered the mastermind of the Easter Sunday suicide bombings, is currently serving as Sri Lanka’s Minister of Justice.

He made this disclosure at a public meeting held in the Ratnapura District. According to Weerawansa, the individual who traveled to Batticaloa at the time to represent Zahran Hashim in court is none other than the present Minister of Justice, Harshana Nanayakkara.

Weerawansa further emphasized that it is ironic that lawyers who defended individuals such as Zahran Hashim are appointed to ministerial positions, while intelligence officials like retired Major General Suresh Sale—who he claims rendered distinguished service for national security—have been imprisoned and subjected to hardship.

He also accused the government of weakening Sri Lanka’s intelligence services and armed forces in an attempt to appease the LTTE diaspora. He alleged that the government is even reluctant to use the term “war heroes” and is disregarding national traditions and cultural heritage, including Jayamangala Gatha and Sinhala New Year customs.

Additionally, Weerawansa stated that the government has failed in managing the economy. He said that although the administration came to power promising to combat corruption, it is now allegedly engaged in large-scale corruption in broad daylight. He pointed to issues such as the importation of substandard coal, the importation of low-quality medicines, and the failure to control rice prices, which he claimed have placed severe pressure on the public. He further asserted that the burden of these failures is ultimately borne by ordinary citizens through increased electricity bills and taxes.

The National Freedom Front leader concluded by stating that to rescue the country from its current crisis, new leadership is required—leadership that does not betray policy principles and that recognizes and respects the country’s cultural and national heritage.
